Linux Mint 16 Driver Issue

    Hello All,

    I'm a complete newcomer(but old) to Linux, been with Windows since 2.1

    I will try to make this short.?

    Equipment: HP Pavilion TS 14 Notebook ~ i5 - HD 4200 (4th Gen) & 16GB Mem

    Ran the Live CD of Linux Mint 16(MATE) everything worked fine.

    $ sudo lspci -k gave:

    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

               Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2161
               Kernel driver in use: i915
               Kernel modules: i915
     
    I then installed it, and re-booted, presented with a "Black Screen"... I used brigtness controls, and it displays.
     
    I did another $ sudo lspci -k gave:
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
               Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2161
               Kernel driver in use: i915
     
    So it is now "missing" the "Kernel modules: i915" compared to Live.?
    So not sure how to correct that.???
    Is that why I have the "Black Screen" at bootup,
     
    I have also spent days Googling about changes to "Grub" configuration with regards
    to how that may also be a cause of the Black Screen at Bootup.?
     
    It appears to indicate that I need to add some parameter in the line:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=linux acpi_backlight=vendor"
    I'm not sure what I need in this line.?
     
    From another source I found the commands that gave me "Backlight" information:
    acpi_video0 and intel_backlight and max brightness = 100
     
    If anybody can help, It would be appreciated, I don't want to give up now.

    Hi - this isn't really the right forum for your problem - I see you have asked in a couple of other
    places though. I'm not really sure why it's coming up blank after install when the live CD works
    fine.

    I would point out that "Kernel driver in use" implies "Kernel Module": The former means
    "We are actually using this module", the latter "We think we could use this module"

    You will be able to see the various options you can start the i915 module with by issuing
    a "modinfo i915" command - perhaps one of those will do what you need.

    Hi fledermaus,

    I' new and trying all avenues...

    I thought this maybe my issue.?

    I currently have: acpi_osi=linux acpi_backlight=vendor

    Boots full brightness now, but have some options for that.

    Hi - glad you found the solution to your problem: If you haven't already, it would probably be a good idea to send the information about your hardware, a description of your problem and a description of the solution to the maintainers of the mint installer: Might help them make it work out of the box for other people in your position.

    Hello,

    After downloading the Intel driver installer from Intel for Linux Graphics Installer for Ubuntu* 13.10, 32-bit, the file intel-linux-graphics-installer_1.0.4-0intel1_i386.deb, it installed ok, but when executed stopped with the message "Distribution not supported".  Yet Mint is Ubuntu-based.  Is there any way to make the installer work with a "force" option"?

    Below is a sample of the symptoms of the driver issue:
