Multiple external monitors

Here is part of what I wanted to post:

I have a dell e5540 running xubuntu 13.10. When I dock in my docking station that has dual DVI output, I can't individually address the external monitors.

Right now I have my machine docked. eDP1 is my laptop's LCD panel. DP1 in an ASUS 23" monitor. I have another ASUS 23" monitor connected as well to what should be DP2, but it is just mirroring what is on DP1.

I want the LCD panel turned off, and both external monitors turned on each displaying different content. With nvidia stuff this was easy to do w/ either xrandr or the built in tools. I'm at a loss here on how to get the intel drivers to realize I've got two external monitors.

It seems it doesn't like the output of xrandr.

Let me try to trim out some of the output about what modes are supported.

Hi - what does the output look like when you're not docked? I don't see an LVDS entry there, which I would expect for the built-in LCD. If you could isolate the xrandr output for each monitor, that might give us a clue.

Also, this isn't really an installer realted question, so I'm going to see about getting it moved to the advanced forum (but don't worry about that, just keep talking here and at some point the thread should magically move)

Hm. Well, nothing springs to mind immediately - I'm going to have to check with some colleagues.

With regards to the spam blocking - I feel your pain. It'sprevented me from replying to people
on a number of occasions.

I have the same exact issue with the same hardware (Dell Latitude E5540 + docking station) on Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04.

No matter what combination output I use (VGA, DVI, HDMI/Display port) I use, any two external monitors will mirror each other.

Bump...

Wondering if anyone has any more info on this. It'd be nice to be able to use both my big monitors.

I've confirmed w/ a friend here at work that has the same hardware, that what I'm wanting to do is possible running windows, so I know it isn't a hardware issue, it's got to be a driver issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this?

I'm now having to look at trying external usb w video adapters.
