    Hi there,

I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit on a Samsung Series 5 - 530U3C-AD5 and everything went fine with the installation of Linux Graphics Installer and I'm running 1.0.20 driver (in fact I didn't realized any significant improvement from previous driver, but a least it's running fine).

I followed the instructions and uninstalled lintian package before installing Graphics Installer.

My question is: can I reinstall lintian package after a succesfull instalation of Graphics INstaller?

Is it important to have lintian package installed on my system?

  • Hi benicchio,

The short answers are, "no, you do not have to have lintian installed on your system." For the second question, I yield to official Ubuntu policies-- though in my personal (and humble) opinion, it is not important to have lintian on a casual system.

TL;DR. The lintian package is used by official Ubuntu and Debian package maintainers to ensure their packages are compliant with "official" Ubuntu and Debian repository policies. It is a tool designed for developers and package maintainers. The reason we have have users uninstall lintian is because "official" repository policies forbid cryptographically signing packages with GnuPG. Signing packages with GnuPG is perfectly valid and "legal" for both Ubuntu/DEB and Fedora/RPM packages. By signing packages, users can verify that, "yes, this came from thac0 or vivijim," and not some other entity. This is why, on the Downloads page for the Graphics Installer, we have users add my key and vivijim's key to your system, so your system can verify the authenticity of the Graphics Installer and the packages we host on

  • Hi benichio-- quick note that I'm moving this thread to the Power Users' forum, because all things lintian are  highly technical.
