Hardware: Intel NUC5CPYH
Display: Dell 2405FPW 1920x1200 monitor, connected via HDMI using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter
OS: Ubuntu 15.10
Used Intel Graphics Installer 1.2.1 to obtain driver
Several times a day, the display will turn all white. The computer is still running - any music that was playing continues to play. I can still ssh into the machine and run a shell. If I hit CTRL-ALT-F1, it appears to switch virtual consoles, as the screen changes to all black - no text is displayed.
Rebooting the computer fixes the problem.
Suspending the computer & then waking it up also fixes the problem.
Any ideas? Is anybody else seeing this problem?
Hi - the driver in ubuntu 15.10 isn't upgraded by the installer, so what you're seeing sounds like a bug in the shipped driver - is there anything of note in the dmesg output when this happens? It's probably worth your while fileing a bug under the drm/intel component at bugs.freedesktop.org for this one - the i915 developers track bugs there and this sounds like something they'd want to get on top of.
What exactly does the installer do? I thought it was providing updated drivers for Intel GPUs. My apologies for my confusion.
I do see intel-related error messages in dmesg, so I'll include those when I file a bug.
I couldn't find a "drm/intel" component at bugs.freedesktop.org. Should I file it under the "Drivers/DRI/i915" component in the "Mesa" product, or is there a more approriate place?
Thanks for your help.
The installer upgrades a few components, but only if they're not up to date - 01.org release their stack
(the kernel i915 driver, mesa, libdrm and a few other libraries) quarterly, and Ubuntu (for example) releases
every six months - but the releases aren't co-ordinated, so sometimes the distribution is up-to-date or
ahead of the 01.org release already with respect to some components.
For the bug try product=DRI and component DRM/Intel.
FYI, I have the exact same issue with my Zotac ci323Nano.
