Just as an FYI...
I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS on an old Dell Inspiron 1420. Everything was great until I installed the Intel Graphics Installer for Ubuntu. Thereafter, the screen was almost too dark to use the computer. I tried every remedy I could find via Google to no avail. I then re-built the machine again and figured I would try installing the Intel Graphics Installer as my very first install and run it again to ensure what had previouslu happened wasn't a conflict with other installs such as Cairo, Open GL, etc. Same thing happened again.
For my purposes, this tool destroyed hours of configuration work and consumed hours of troubelshooting work. I have to recommend doing a full system back-up before using this tool.
Hm. That's a little distressing: If you don't mind my asking, what's the exact hardware inside the inspiron?

should tell us what we need to know.
