  • I have installed the intel drivers 1.0.1 on my new Haswell based lenovo.  When i boot the machine the screen remains blank but i can hear the Ubuntu 13.04 login drum beat.  The X.org logs also shows that the X server started properly.

When i pass the "nomodeset" argument to the kernel then i do see the login screen but only in cosole mode i.e. X fails to start.  When i look at the X.org logs it says "no screens found".

I have also tried with gfxmode etc but no luck.  BTW i have manually upgraded the kernel to 3.8 and then 3.9. Still no joy.  Befor kernel 3.8 i would not even hear the drum beat sound of the login prompt.

What is interesting is that when i installed Ubuntu 13.04 the graphical GUI woked just fine but i suspect it was using the framebuffer.

Any help will be really appreciated.  If i get get X.org to work then i'll have to return this machine as i am not interested in Windows 8.

Also i know there might be more stuff that i need to provide to diagnose this issue.  Please let me know what you need.

    Regards

  • Could you please open a terminal and execute this command:

    lspci -nn | grep VGA

    than paste output here?

    Thanks

  • I returned the Lenovo for various reasons and bought a HP Envy instead.  I still face the exact same issues as descirbed before for the Lenovo.  Here is the output you requested for the HP instead.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Haswell Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0416] (rev 06)

  • Could you provide us with the X.org log from /var/log ?

    Jul 09, 2013 - 07:41am
  • This first one is the output when kernel is not passed the "nomodeset" argument.  The end result is that X fails to start and i just get the console login.

The other output is when nomodeset is passed.  In that case the screen goes blank but i do hear the drum beats of the login screen.  The ouput for that is pasted after the "======" line.

There is a 3rd successful case which i don't paste the output.  That is when fbdev is used.  But obvioulsy i am trying to get this work with the Intel driver.

  • Thanks, we'll see if we can figure out what's going on here.

  • I am able to get it working now.  Instead of "nomodeset" i pass "video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0".   I wish the latter kernel option was documented well.  I just stumbled upon it on the Fedora 19 forums.   Also i don't completely understand what this workaround does but i guess i does not matter as i am off the fbdev and using the real driver.

    Thanks

  • i have had the same problem.

installed the 2013Q1 graphics stack from intel on raring (13.04) and suddenly had blank screen or "low graphics mode" problems on boot.

seems like the patch that was issued is not being picked up by the intel boys and when the installer does a distro upgrade on your system this bug rears its ugly head again.

i fixed my system by booting into text mode (or getting a terminal aft5er boot) and inserting this line

    "sleep 10" into

    /etc/init/lightdm.conf

just before the line that reads

    "exec lightdm"

reboot - job's right - have a read of the launchpad page (the bug number in the subject line) - it explains what's going on.

looks like the intel boys need to be across some of these issues - and YES it is the intel stuff - because the symptoms didn't start until i installed their latest graphics stack

  • We don't install/upgrade or otherwise touch any of lightdm, gdm or plymouth so it seems unlikely that that's the cause of the problem.

I found out the hard way that the issue is screen brightness. Press the function button and the up arrow!
