    Hey guys, I've been struggling to get my videos and games function as it should be without any freezes or combing effects and other visual disruptions. I own a Toshiba TECRA M7 laptop (v: PTM70U-00D009). It may be a tad old, but it kicks ass all round with the exception of the video quality when it comes to HD videos and the crashing and freezing of my games. The graphics chip is a Intel(R) 945GM x86/MMX/SSE2.

    I have already tried the Intel Graphics Installer (only an older version could accepted) but has stated:

    Checking if Intel Graphics Card is available...OK

    Retrieving Information from 01.org....OK

    Checking distribution...Failed

    "distribution not supported"

    Here are all of the details I've collected with the use of command line functions within the terminal:

    I'm done some researhing I am assuming it's to do with the changing something within the grub menu using nomodeset (at the minimum).

    I think I have to change

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

    to

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset splash"

    or

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset splash"

    However I'm not 100% sure how to go about that. I have left the details of the grub file below:

    $ cat /etc/default/grub

    # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update

    # /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

    # For full documentation of the options in this file, see:

    # info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

    GRUB_DEFAULT=0

    GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0

    GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

    GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`

    # Uncomment to get a beep at grub start

    #GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1"

    Keep in mind, I'm still abit of a nood when it comes to this stuff and I would really appreciate any help & advice given to me to get this graphics chip working as it should. I have already watched videos playing on it within Windows XP flawlessly and so fluidly and beautifully and I would like Linux Mint to give it the same treatment, or at least to the best of it's ability.

    More details of the issues can be found below and my data I've picked up from the terminal commands are laid out below that (I don't know what would be useful or not).

    Thank you.

    Totem plays too slow, visuals are delayed but audio plays fine (720p – 1080p). Dvd quality plays fine.

    VLC, audio plays fine but visuals freezes when play HD quality videos (1080p). Can pause and skip ahead and see images perfectly but visuals skips when played. Dvd quality plays fine, but sometimes have combing effects.

    PlayOnLinux, all my games plays but the screen is pure black. But other games such as Assualt Cube (quite sluggish using too many bots), Frets on Fire and kapman plays okay.

    Emulation ZNES and its roms play fine, but eventually crashes/freezes (including sound which is very annoying to hear) overtime causing myself having to kill the process.
