A New Tier of Non-Volatile Memory for OpenStack-based Clouds

Another Open Infrastructure Summit is here, and our team at Intel is really enjoying connecting with the community in Denver—we hope you’re having a great week, too! This coming week, our team will share how Intel is helping address the requirements demanded by data-centric, compute-intensive workloads quickly growing across data center and edge.

Storage and memory technologies must evolve to keep up with these daunting challenges. One of the ways Intel is helping address these demands is through innovations like persistent memory, or the recently released Intel® Optane Data Center Technology, which delivers a new tier of non-volatile memory that has the potential to transform a number of data-intensive workloads. This technology offers the capacity and persistence of storage along with the performance and direct application byte-addressability of memory, enabling faster start-up times, quicker access to large in-memory datasets, and often improved total cost of ownership.

Intel is working across a breadth of communities—including OpenStack, Nova, Ceph, Redis, Cassandra, Spark, Memcache and others—to help optimize solutions for this technology while providing tools like the Persistent Memory Development Kit to ensure users get the most out of their underlying hardware.

  • Performance & TCO Improvements on OpenStack: Check out the TCO improvements achieved in using Intel® Data Center Optane Technology's Memory Mode with OpenStack for VM density improvement, and the storage IOPS improvements achieved using its Storage-over-APP Mode.
  • Persistent Memory in OpenStack: See one of the key use cases of Intel® Data Center Optane Technology in OpenStack, passing physical persistent memory namespaces to VMs so that the applications in VMs can leverage App-Direct Mode using a Redis database. Observe how OpenStack tracks the persistent memory resources and orchestrates the requests.
