Packet Processing

There is ever-increasing pressure on networks to perform and manage greater workloads with the uptick in cloud, mobility, and now the Internet of Things. The Packet Processing project contains an important collection of tools to accelerate development of network transformation software, as outlined by Software Defined Networking (SDN) and a complementary initiative, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

Longer Term Update in The Works

I am pleased to announce additional developments within our project.

In addition to standardizing and publishing performance, we have undertaken a significant effort that we would like the community to be aware of:

Intel's DPDK vSwitch forwarding engine is being reworked to take advantage of upcoming Intel DPDK library update offering a programmable and scalable switching pipeline.   As a result, advancements in the base feature set will be minimal this quarter.

This advancement is in response to community need to have a reference vSwitch that is more scalable than current implementations and that is higher performing using hardware offloads when available.

We anticipate having a proposal fo this work  at mid-year establishing a scalable vSwitch with foundation for hardware acceleration initially on Intel Ethernet Controllers and subsequently on Intel Ethernet Switch Silicon.

Please take into consideration the upcoming code changes (significant in forwarding engine and minimal in the control daemon) into your ongoing plans in using our community vSwitch project.
