Intel® Data Plane Performance Demonstrators

Intel® Data Plane Performance Demonstrators (Intel® DPPD) are Linux user space applications based upon the Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK). They can be used to develop best practices and TCO models for Telco customers, investigate the impact of new Intel compute, network and storage technologies, characterize performance, and develop optimal system architectures and configurations.

Description

This Project Provides: Telco application source code.

The Value of the Intel Data Plane Performance Demonstrators Project

Intel® Data Plane Performance Demonstrators (Intel® DPPD) are Linux user space applications based upon the Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK).

These example applications are intended to:

  • develop best practices for implementing high-performance packet processing solutions on Intel platforms
  • develop TCO models for Telco customers evaluating Intel-based networking solutions
  • investigate the impact of new Intel compute, network and storage technologies on performance
  • characterize performance of VNFs in the context of key industry NFV and SDN use cases
  • develop optimal system architectures and configurations for multi-VM packet processing environments

They are mainly intended for performance analysis purposes. Others are welcome to participate in creating new features for this project, which might be as diverse as user interfaces, dynamic configuration as well as the existing usages in network, compute systems and storage.

Who It’s For

This project is meant to provide applications that could be used by Telcos to determine platform capability.

Project Specifics

This open source project launched in 2014. Its applications are distributed under either the 3-clause BSD license, or the GPLv2 license. They are written in the C and Python programming languages.

Upstream projects include the Data Plane Development Kit.

About Intel Involvement

Intel has provided these applications via open source to enable customization for Telcos testing Intel server platforms and their systems. This project is optimized through open source for Intel® Xeon® processors.
