Intel Builders University Training Materials

Intel has created a series of Network Builders University courses for the Open Visual Cloud. These courses are aimed at developers working with media, AI, and graphics technologies to establish enhanced or new visual cloud services. The Builders University program was created as a resource to accelerate the deployment of virtualized technologies through education. The university includes a broad collection of virtual training to help technical professionals in the network industry to improve their knowledge of key Intel® technologies, industry trends, and technical aspects of network function virtualization (NFV) deployments.
 
Visual Cloud curriculum is now part of the Intel® Network Builders University.
 
Registration is required to view the course material, however registration is free. 

Open Visual Cloud Program Overview

With visual computing workloads growing at an accelerating pace, cloud service providers (CSPs), communications service providers (CoSPs), and enterprises are rethinking the physical and virtual distribution of compute resources. Visual cloud computing consists of a set of capabilities for remotely consuming content and services that center around the efficient delivery of visual experiences —both live and file-based —as well as applications that add intelligence to video content and tap into machine learning and other artificial intelligence areas, such as object recognition.

Course 1: Visual Cloud Introduction: Opening a World of Visual Innovation

 
In this course Lynn Comp, Vice President, Data Center Group and General Manager of the Visual Cloud Division at Intel Corporation, provides an overview of the visual cloud market, industry trends and design principles. This course provides an introduction to the four core building blocks of visual cloud and the five key services. Lynn also explains how Intel helps meet the growing demands for visual cloud workloads by enabling hardware and software solutions for video delivery, cloud graphics, and media analytics. 

Course 2: Scalable Video Technology (SVT)

 
This course provides an introduction into the features and architecture of Scalable Video Technology (SVT): 3 dimensional parallelism, rate distortion optimized classifier, and resource adaptive scalability. This course will also discuss the real-time performance on Intel® Xeon® based processors.

Course 3: Intel® Select Solution for Visual Cloud Delivery Networks

 
In this course, Nehal Mehta, Visual Cloud Segment Manager at Intel, introduces the Intel® Select Solution for Visual Cloud Delivery Networks and how it has been specifically designed to meet the needs of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) of today and tomorrow. He explores some of the emerging opportunities and challenges with CDNs and the edge of the network and why CDNs need to transform. He then goes into greater detail on the benefits gained from Intel Select Solutions for Visual Cloud Delivery Network.

Course 4: Rendering 101: A Primer – Graphics, Visualization and Rendering

 
In this course, Katrina Feliciano-Stoddard, Intel Product Line Leader for Visualization Solutions, discusses the difference between graphics, visualization and rendering. She then goes into greater detail regarding raster and vector graphics before providing an overview of data and 3D visualization. Katrina explains the different markets where rendering is used today and expands on the quality and performance tradeoffs of offline, interactive and real-time rendering.

Course 5: Rendering 201: Rasterization, Ray Tracing and the Intel® Rendering Framework

 
In this course, Katrina Feliciano-Stoddard, Intel Product Line Leader for Visualization Solutions, provides an overview of rasterization and ray tracing including the advantages and challenges of each method for visualization. Katrina examines the trends in visualization and then introduces the open source libraries that make up the Intel® Rendering Framework.

Course 6: Introduction to Open Visual Cloud

 
In this course, Craig Hurst, Director of Software Strategy and Product Management in the Visual Cloud Division at Intel, provides an overview of the Open Visual Cloud as an open source project that offers a set of pre-defined reference pipelines for various target visual cloud use cases. He discusses the visual cloud design considerations from a communications service provider perspective and how Open Visual Cloud benefits the ecosystem. He later explains the Open Visual Cloud reference pipelines and how Intel is investing in technology to establish a common, scalable reference architecture for Visual Cloud.

Course 7: Introduction to Immersive Media

 
In this course, Dusty Robbins, Immersive Media Segment Manager, Visual Cloud Division at Intel,  provides and introduction to the exciting world of immersive media within Visual Cloud. It covers the immersive media market and four key use cases including 360 video, volumetric streaming, augmented reality (AR) and immersive gaming.

Course 8: Open Visual Cloud: Building Software Stacks and Reference Pipelines

 
In this course, Surbhi Madan, Solution Architect at Intel, looks at Intel’s role in the Open Visual Cloud, an open source project building on industry standards based frameworks and optimized, interoperable software ingredients to release reference pipelines for key target use cases. She discusses the availability of Open Visual Cloud open source software on the github.com repository and conducts demonstrations building FFmpeg in the cloud repository and encoding using Scalable Video Technology for HEVC and AV1. Surbhi then looks closer at Open Visual Cloud reference pipelines, how this applies to media analytics, the ingredients of this Open Visual Cloud pipeline and how this can be run through an FFmpeg or GStreamer framework.
